Khotang Halesi Tour is a pilgrimage tour to one of the oldest and holiest religious sites in Nepal, the Halesi Mahadev temple and caves. Sometimes also called the Pashupatinath of the east, the temple and caves receive a huge influx of pilgrims during the festive periods like Shivaratri, Ram Navami, Ganesh Chaturthi and more. The natural caves here, which is believed to have been in existence for over 6000 years were supposedly the abode of Lord Shiva and his consort Gauri at one point.

Legends say Lord Shiva took refuge in this cave to hide from the demon Bhasmasur. Inside the caves are natural images of Shiva as well as a Shiva Linga. North of the Shiva linga, you will also find a narrow pass through which sinners supposedly cannot go through. The water dripping from the caves’ ceilings are also treated as quite holy. The Halesi Mahadev temple and caves attract thousands of Hindu devotees every year. But Hindus aren’t the only one that revere this site. The caves are also sacred to Buddhists, who believe that Padmasambhava, better known as Guru Rinpoche meditated in these caves for three months.

Our Khotang Halesi Tour first starts with a full day sightseeing tour around Kathmandu’s various cultural and religious landmarks. The following day, we will depart early for Halesi, which lies around 220 km away from the capital. After a full day of driving, we will finally arrive at our lodge in Khotang. The next morning, we will explore Halesi, starting with the Halesi Mahadev temple, then moving on to the intriguing caves and finally ending the tour at the Matrika monastery. The 5 day Khotang Halesi Tour ends with the return drive to Kathmandu, followed by your departure the next day.
