Join us on the Lumbini Tour to explore Lumbini, the deeply religious and spiritual pilgrimage site attributed as the birthplace of Gautama Buddha.

Lumbini is one of the most important Buddhist pilgrimage sites, located in the Rupandehi district of Nepal. As the birthplace of Gautama Buddha, the founder of Buddhism, Lumbini carries a lot of religious, cultural, spiritual as well as historical significance. Also known as Siddhartha Gautama or Shakyamuni, Buddha is said to have lived sometime between 6th and 4th century BCE. According to popular belief, Gautama gave up his life as a prince to live as a severe ascetic in order to gain an understanding of human pain and suffering and their causes. Realizing this is not the correct path either, he eventually found a middle ground between sensual indulgence and severe asceticism. This led to him becoming the Buddha, which means an enlightened one. He shared his knowledge and findings with the people throughout his lifetime and his teachings eventually led to what is present-day Buddhism.

The Lumbini Tour package explores various sites with close ties to Buddha’s early life. The most prominent landmark there may be the Sacred Garden and the temple of Maya Devi (mother of Buddha). The holy Pushkarini Pond is said to have been where Maya Devi took a ritualistic bath before giving birth. The remains of the Kapilvastu palace have also been excavated and preserved here. The Ashoka Pillar, with its 3rd century BCE stone inscription, is another historically significant structure to explore here. Finally, there are numerous newer landmarks as well, such as the World Peace Pagoda, along with monasteries built with the help of Japan, Thailand, Sri Lanka and various other nations.

The Lumbini Tour first starts with your arrival in Kathmandu, followed by a flight or drive to Lumbini the next day. We will have a full day of touring around Lumbini on the third day, followed by the return flight or drive back to Kathmandu. Finally, we will have one more tour around the various UNESCO world heritage sites across the capital, spread out across a whole day. With your departure the following morning, the 6 day Lumbini Tour comes to an end.

We will depart from Kathmandu after breakfast and spend around 7-8 hours on the road depending on the traffic density and length of our breaks. Once at Lumbini, you will have some leisure time. You can spend the evening exploring the locality or save all of the exploration for the next day, whichever you wish.

If your travel budget is looking good, then a flight to Bhairahawa is also available from TIA. Choosing this route means you will only need to drive for an hour or so after your flight to reach Lumbini. Thanks to this, you will have loads of free time for you to explore the city on your own.
